Moss in place of grass?

I have an area (50' x 25') in which grass does poorly. Someone has suggested I try moss. I'd be glad to hear from anyone who has done that. Is there a particularly good book I should be consulting? Thanks. ... wdc

These are a couple books that you might want to check out if you are interested in gardening with mosses.

Schenk, G. 1997. Moss Gardening: including lichens, liverworts and other miniatures. Timber Press: Portland, Oregon.

Cullina, William. 2008. Native Ferns, Moss, and Grasses: From Emerald Carpet to Amber Wave, Serene and Sensuous Plants for the Garden. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

If it IS a good place for moss, you may already have some. Examine the ground carefully. It tends to seek out places where other things don't grow.
