While the Japanese Tassel Fern is rated as Evergreen, it can look fairly "ratty" by springtime, regardless of sun, shade exposure. I have dozens of them, in many sites in the garden. Some receive morning sun during the summer, some winter sun only, others in evergreen shade and they all look about the same when springtime arrives. They are also one of the last species to sprout new growth in the spring.
When you plant it, add some mulch around it and be sure to keep the soil moist until it become established. The soil should never be permitted to become completely dry.
