lady fern transplanting issues

I transplanted some lady fern (athy. filix femina) this spring from a friend's garden. Most of the fronds that grew have broken off near the base and alot of the other ferns didn't send up fronds at all. They are in a wind-protected area but it could be the nocturnal 4-legged visitors knocking them over. My question is, do they just sit there the first summer and make roots? Will they be stronger and thicker next year?

Peggy

ps. they get at least an inch of water a week
