Can anyone identify this?

It appears to be some kind of fungus to me. These come up in large clumps in the woods. The tops look sort of like a dead flower and within a few days the whole thing turns brown and starts rotting. I took a picture of one next to a ruler to give an idea of size.

Looks like an Indian pipe, Monotropa uniflora perhaps.

Thank you so much. That is it. I would have sworn it was a fungus, but instead it turns out to be a plant that feeds off a fungus. Just fascinating.
