How to divide ferns?

I have always loved ferns and wanted them in my yard but have never bought any for some reason. Today I went to Lowes, having finally decide to purchase one and I found them on sale for $1 each! These are large ferns (gallon size buckets) and seem fairly healthy except for the fact that they have overgrown the pots they are in.

I would like to divide them so that I can plant them in more locations. What is the healthiest way to divide ferns? Thank you!

PS They are Kimberly Queen Ferns if that makes a difference.

When you take them out of the pot, do you see distinct clumps? If so, that is a good place to divide them.

I don't know yet.. I was waiting for an answer before I attempted to pull them out. I didn't want to do it wrong and damage them. I will take a look tomorrow and see. :)

You can slip them out of their pots to examine them, rootball intact, without causing them much harm.

Typically, most folks wait until spring to divide or plant ferns.
