Yea i tried it once. Bought a box of spores in compost,and got a few tiny shrooms. Found out later the best way to do it is remove a section of lawn and lay the contents on that,replacing the turf on top.

If it's your first time growing, probably the best and easiest are the oyster mushroom kits. Following basic directions it's hard to go wrong.

I had some I thought dried out and died, I put a tight lid on the plastic box I had them in and forgot them... until suddenly there were more clusters of oysters growing out under the lid!

Don't bring outdoor materials into the house without pasteurizing them and knowing what you're doing. You can get some nasty molds and potentially toxic mushrooms that way.

What I don't understand is how these mushrooms grow in the wild if they need to be so darned sterile. And why do they not need to be inoculated into seed in the wild, but seem to do quite well?

I'd love to grow some portobellos, but I tried to read up on it, and it seems way too expensive. A $36 kit produces 4 lbs. That's more than I pay in the grocery store!
