If you mean Amanita muscaria, it's perfectly legal, but I don't know if anyone's ever put the effort into figuring out how to cultivate them (since they're not edible & aren't nearly as worthwhile from a psychotropic standpoint as the various Psilocybe). The hallucinogenic effects, btw, vary greatly between populations, as does the toxicity; in some areas this species is quite dangerous.

I have also been interested in growing A. muscaria. I have seen them while hiking in the western woodlands a number of times. The sight of them always delights me.

I'm considering collecting a few caps and letting them dry out and then crumbling into my woodland garden which is mulched heavily with pine needles; a very hit and miss approach I must admit.

As Patrick noted this is not a worthwhile mushroom to experiment with, however I do appreciate it's ethnobotanical history.

From my understanding they are not parasitic or saprophytic, but instead they are classified as ectomycorrhizal symbionts, (the tree roots and fungi both benefit from their relationship). The mushroom gets nutrients and the fungi protect the tree's roots from soil pathogens.

It's kind of hard to decipher some of the "science-speak" that I've come across on the web, but it sounds like that A. muscaria not only forms this relationship with pine and birch, but sometimes with other tree species as well...

Very little success in cultivation of fly agarics (a. muscaria). Could try planting a young tree and sprinkling spores over roots. Fingers crossed the whole time, of course.
