can anyone i d this mushroom

Growing at the base of a poplar tree that has died.... I read somewhere that if the gills turn black after being picked that a mushroom is not edible ( dont know if that is true or not ) and these mushrooms remained white 48 hours after picking. The top turned from white to a very light beige. I am sure they are growing from the roots rotting on the poplar tree as we have had a lot of rain this summer and early fall.

Any help would be appreciated.

There are so many mushrooms that look like yours! I'd be at a real loss to ID for you. And the black thing is not true. The REAL story is that no mushroom should be eaten unless a one hundred percent identification is made.

The first step in identifying a mushroom is to take a spore print: remove the stem and place the cap, gill side down on a sheet of white paper. Leave for 24 hours then check the pattern and colour.

Once you do that, you can use the key in the link below to identify. However, do not eat the mushroom unless you are 100% sure, and you can only be 100% sure if a mushroom expert has confirmed your ID
