Silver lady fern looking bedraggled

Can someone with experience tell me if there's any hope for my "silver lady" fern. Mealy bugs have been attacking it lately, and despite spraying several times a week with Safer pyrethrin, I'm not sure it's done much good. As you can see, the leaves are browning, but I don't know whether that's normal or not. The plant gets a couple of hours of bright sun every day, but also shade, which I thought was what they like. It gets watered at least twice a week. I live in Southern California, near the ocean, so it rarely gets above 85 F. here, but the climate is quite dry.

I have a terrible history with ferns. Staghorns are the only kind I've been able to keep alive very long.
