Ferns are being stripped of leaves
| | |
Posted by theexpounder 8 (My Page) on Tue, Sep 19, 06 at 21:58
| I have two ferns on the front porch. The leaves are being competely striped of the leaves and little black round balls are on the floor under the plants.
I have seen some small lizards around, but not for sure what is happening to the plants.
If you have any ideas let me know. |

| Sounds like caterpillars to me, and the little round balls are cat poo. Check for the culprits under the leaves, perhaps, hiding out during the day. They might be more active in the early morning or evening hours. |

| I have a similiar issue, so what do you treat the plants with? |

A couple of things. Gonzer just recommended Merit® 2.5G granular systemic insecticide for use on ferns. According to its publicity this will kill the caterpillars. The little round balls are I suspect cat-erpillar poo. Don't hurt the lizards they will be gobbling up anything that is small and crawls or flies. Regards, John |
