Bringing a boston fern indoors/ avoiding critters

My neighbor has offered me a beautiful Boston fern which she kept outside on her patio all summer. She has no room inside the house for the winter so I will inherit the plant. What should I do before bringing the fern inside to make sure I'm not also providing a winter home for critters?
