Southern Maidenhair: can overwinter in pot outdoors?

I have two beautiful Southern Maidenhair ferns in large pots on my northeast-facing front porch. Last winter I brought them indoors but I've read that they are supposed to be winter hardy in my zone (8). Would this still be the case if they are in pots as opposed to in the ground? And, if so, would they do better in the growing season if they've been indoors or out over the winter?

Southern Maidenhair(Adiantum capillus-veneris), is native as far north as Ohio and South Dakota and some gardeners grow them outdoors in Michigan. They should be fine in Zone 8, although they won't be evergreen.

If you mean you plan to put the pots into the ground, I think that should work. If the pots are sitting above ground the roots could be damaged by freezes. I often put potted native plants in the ground for the winter.

Thanks for the replies. Hadn't occurred to me to put the pots in the ground. Will try that!
