Have tried 1st time this season..no luck! Just bought another to winter & hope for best next spring. Should I leave in the pot, or place in ground. It is just a little guy, so I don't know how to handle him. The 1st one did NOT do well, so I need help with this one. Anyone in this area have any luck or comments for me?
Tks,

| What happened to the one that you had no luck with? When did it die? When was it planted? These ferns are super cold hardy into Quebec, Canada so as long as you've had yours out (and not sitting in your living room), I would plant them now. They do have an issue with high summer heat so I have mine planted in the shade of some Canadian hemlocks. They are supposed to be good to about zone 7 (at higher zones they have increasing issues with heat). Being coastal though, my winters may be somewhat milder and my summers cooler and moister than yours.--Be sure to mulch. These are terrific looking ferns though. The above ground trunks of mine remind me of tree ferns. Good luck! |

Granmona, I live very close to you! Anyway, I started some ostrich ferns this past spring and they never really "took off" that well. I'm hoping they are just slow growers? Don't know- but with our weather this year, they got plenty of H2O. I saw pics of these ferns and they looked huge.....maybe patience is they key. Mine aren't dead, just small. Hope you have better luck! |

| Patience, get them in the ground and they take a bit of time to develope a good root mass but when they do they will go great guns.I split mine all the time and place them in trouble spots around the yard .My favorite spot for raising the to transplant is by a compost area I have in the shady they go crazy there with the coffee grounds and leaves etc.they like to eat and drink. |
