It looks like Florida sword fern (Nephrolepis cordifolia). I also brought some specimens home to NC from Florida several years ago. I planted them in a sheltered spot and mulched them heavily during the first winter. They barely survived, but never recovered, and all have died. They are a close cousin of the Boston fern, and should be treated the same way if you want them to survive. It is a beautiful fern, especially in the huge clumps seen in so many Florida gardens. It is usually a very upright plant, and does not have the graceful, draping habit of the Boston fern, so you might not like it as an indoor plant. Probably worth a try though!!

I found the same fern when we were there several years ago. It is a sword fern and I found info on it through The Florida Cooperative Extension Service websites. I noticed the grape shaped tubers in the roots and asked gardening locals about them. The tubers of course work for water storage during rare periods when the sand they grow in drys out but another function of the tubers struck me as unique. They serve as a filtration system in brackish water. The ferns will grow here in zone 5 but they are too tender to overwinter outside. The ones I had in pots and brought inside survived. Apparently,the transplants will not grow if they do not have the tubers included (from info I recieved from those locals). Sandy
