    Nice Josh.
Can you take close ups of each rock? Especially the ones with the moss?

    Absolutely!
I'll put it at the top of my list.
    Thanks, T-man.

    Here we go, T-man!
I took pics of the mossy rocks in particular, but I can include the others later.
Let me know what you think!

Thanks Josh. Those look great. Am wondering, do you ever find pieces of the moss that have been tore or scrapped off the rocks? If so I sure would be interested in getting some to grow.

    OOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!
too bad they don't use emoticons here!!!
    FANTASTIC JOSH!
The last image is a real puzzler (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/Manreason/Moss/Yard%20Jan%202010/DSCF7549.jpg)
The plant in the lower right quarter is not a moss it is a Selaginella. I believe S. watsonii. What really throws me is the weird tips but I believe they are strobili that have been chewed on by some animal. Here is an image of the strobili Click here

If your image is much larger than what you had to download at Photobucket can you email it to me Josh? That way I can check it out more closely to try and confirm my belief.

    Hey, Jerry!
I just tromped out to the rock and took a couple pics.
They seem blurry to me, but maybe they'll be of some use for zooming in.
An animal has definitely disturbed the rock...I don't know if it nibbled, though.
    Sending pics now...

Here's a pic of the Mother Rock...a good two and a half feet wide.
That's the northside of the rock...but mostly full sun.

Yes!!! I have to agree with Jerry!!

    OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFANTASTIC is right!!!!!!!
How come we can't use emoticons here anyway? It would be great.
Josh that last picture in your post the second one up, the moss draping over that rock makes me want to be able to grow some so bad..I have no idea if anything like that would ever survive up here!It loks like the moss has been healthy and spreading well..

Some others look like the most beautiful fluffy carpeting!

Look at the leaves on the ground..I can tell you are getting ready for snow..

I wonder if moss like that could survive my type of enviroment? Frigid winters, quick thaws, sometimes very dry summers and springs? Hummmm

    Thank you Josh..

    Mike..:-))

    Thank you, Mike!
Clunky old GardenWeb can't even allow "editing" to posts, so there's no way that
emoticons will ever come into play ;)

Mike, you've got to check out Terrestrial Man's (Jerry's) moss postings.
He's been growing and experimenting with mosses for a long, long time...
and he's put together some great journals of his progress.

I'm sure I could find a moss that will grow in your area. All I have to do is go uphill
(into the mountains) until I hit a cold-zone that matches yours.

Great pics, Josh! Most people never even notice the wonder at their feet ... in too much of a hurry to get somewhere. ;-) Thanks for sharing!

So true, Al! I get down on the ground to examine these guys!

There's a saying, Where we trip, we find treasure!
Slightly different context here, but I like the saying ;)
    Thanks for stopping by, sir!

Thanks for sending the images, Josh.
Beats me what the plant is but I could be entirely wrong about it being a Selaginella. So far the closest image of a moss that even resembles it is in the genus, Neckera, but ??? Maybe some bizarre little flowering plant. I have one tiny little flowering plant growing with the mosses which I did not even see until I took images and enlarged to see better. Well not to hijack your thread but I cannot recall if I have posted a link to the journals I have done on Mosses so the link below will get you to the first pages. Use the links on the right side to access the other 13 journals on bryophytes.

Here is a link that might be useful: Moss Journals
