Question about Ammi (false Queen Anne's Lace)

| I'm a brand new Forum user - this is my very first post. I have been so amazed at the amount of information here! There are so many folks willing to share their ideas and expertise, it's incredible.
Here's my question .. . I have read that the sap from Ammi (false Queen Anne's Lace) can cause a severe skin irritation. I've seen it on several grow lists and just wondered if those of you who have grown it have any problems?
My kids sold flowers at the local Farmer's Market last summer - and we're looking for new things to try - but we don't need to grow anything that will cause skin irritation.
I would be grateful for any information.
Thanks

| I grew some last summer. Although I was fairly careful, I did cut and handle it with bare hands and had no trouble. ThinMan |

| Ammi will give you a nasty rash/blisters/discoloration if you get the sap of the plant on your skin and then your skin is exposed to the sun - the herb Rue does the same thing. As long as you are careful when cutting the stems for selling there shouldn't be any problems. Just tell your customers to wash their hands after giving the stems a fresh cut. |

Thank you both for your insights. My kids are young and still learning to be careful with the flowers. A bout with a nasty rash would be really discouraging to them. Maybe we'll stick with the Zinnias and Sunflowers and maybe try some daisies. Thanks again for your help!! |

| For a Queen Anne's Lace substitute, maybe look at Orlaya? I am trying it the first time this year, and learned about it on this forum. And, if you want to keep your children involved and interested, they may enjoy "Love in the Mist" or nigella with the unusual seed heads after the blooms. Teresa |

Teresa, We actually had Nigella on our wish list - the Orlaya is a great idea - we may try it also. Thanks!! |
