Most Cut Flowers in Smallest Area

Posted by carduus 5 - NE OH (My Page) on

I have a conundrum, in that I only have about a 4x2 area of full sun, and a 10x4 area under a medium-sized tree that's probably close to full shade, and about a 20x10 area under a couple large trees that's definitely full shade. My DW's criteria for a flower garden is that it has to look nice out there, but at the same time, give as much bang for our buck as possible in the cut flowers department.

So can you suggest a group of flowers that would fit in the aforementioned areas, look nice together both in the ground and in arrangements, and work in my zone (5)? Thanks for your help.

Full sun lover's dahlias and zinnias that make great cut flowers. Full shade hosta, Alchmillea, astillbe, columbine (put where you get some sun), calla lily, Japenese Anemone and Lily of the Valley. That's what I have in shade for cut flowers.

I want to introduce myself. I love having cut flowers so I decided to start a cutting garden. I would love suggestions for morning sun/part-sun location.

I live in zone 3A in a semi-arid region and have a very short growing season but wonderfully long days.
