Does miscanthus sinensis hold up well when cut?

| I have several nice clumps of different varieties of miscanthus sinensis and I was thinking of using some in cut flower arrangements. Does anyone have any experience using these? Do they last well or do they turn brown too quickly? I'm particularly interested in how well the variegatus cultivar holds up as it has such nicely varigated foliage.
Thanks,

| Steve, why not just try a few stems and find out? You should know in about a week, which may beat responses you get here. :-) Then you can tell us. ThinMan |

| Yes, I'm already doing a test, ThinMan. I started the test at about the same time that I posted the message but that was a little too late to know the result in time for today's Saturday market. I was hoping to get a response in time to know whether or not to use some miscanthus this week. So far the three varieties I'm testing have been holding up pretty well. |

| The Miscanthus sinensis 'Variegatus' now has unacceptably noticeable browning and wilting at the tips. So it seems that it's really only good for about four days. It would certainly last very well for a special event or a weekend and probably good enough for a 5 day week in an office if cut Monday morning just before delivery. The straight species and the 'Morning Light' are browning at about the same rate but it is less noticeable because they have much thinner blades than the variegatus. |

| That's disappointing. I was already seeing myself stealing some stems from the clumps of Morning Light I have here and there. Thanks for reporting back. TM |

| Miscanthus sinensis is definitely still nice to use for short life arrangements at home! :)
Here I'm using Miscanthus sinensis variegatus to add a little more height and interest to Peonies and Irises. It won't last long but I'll enjoy it on my coffee table for a few days. |

| Guess it is our climate difference but have used any of the miscanthus for bouquets, once it firms up. It is still a bit soft and floppy here, but by the time we have had some hot weather it will get much less floppy. I like to use grasses in bouquets from about mid summer on, but especially in autumn. In August and September a great favorite with our customers is a mixture of reds, golds and oranges with grasses. With the iris and peonies We get a similar look by using varigated iris foliage. |
