post harvest of sunflowers

My sunflowers are coming in great but what do you do when you go to market which for me is 1 1/2 hours away on Tuesdays and Fridays with the sunflowers that open and are ready in between. Can you just cut them and put them in floral preservative till the next trip? I don't have a cooler yet but I have a good air-conditioned building. Some of you are probally wondering air-conditioning. Yes here in Texas we are already experiencing temps close to 90. How do some of ya'll more seasoned growers handle this?

Thanks

Rita

Hi Rita
Not seasoned but I'm having luck by keeping them in a spare fridge or two in the barn, along with other flowers till I can get a real cooler. I think if you wanted to keep them in an a/c bldg, you'd have to keep the temp down in the low 40's to be of any assistance.
Where are the markets you are going to on Tuesday and Friday's, are they in San Ant....?
Did you get the info on Wollams gardens I sent you?

I keep them in two extra fridges in the garage, in preservative water. They don't seem to mind at all. I'm sure a real florist cooler would be better, but this is working out just fine, and used-but-functional fridges are cheap. The one stipulation is that you can't keep fruit or veggies in the fridge with them, or the ethylene gas emitted by the food can cause the flowers to mature (wilt) early. Keeping canned or bottled cold drinks in that fridge, for when you need cooling down yourself, is just fine.
