Wilting hydrangeas

There's nothing I like better than a big bowl of hydrangeas sitting on the sofa table but I can't stop them from wilting shortly after cutting. I was told by a florist to burn the stems but how can they be conditioned if they can't take up water?

RE: Wilting hydrangeas

THe secret to hydrangeas is not to cut them until the pollen in the center has been shed. After that they will hold up just fine. I don't know of anyway to get them to hold up before then. Same is true of hellebores.
