Lily's and KY Farmer's Market

We were on vacation last week and spent a few days with DH's Mom in Lexington, KY. They have a farmers market there and we decided to check it out.
Wow, it was really nice! Two city blocks with booths on either side of a walkway. Flowers, veggies, bread, honey, the works! Most had the white canopies.
One place was selling Orientals or OT lilies- in a sleeve of 4 for $24 or $8 each! They were completely beautiful and I'd say close to 30 inches.
To my (cheapie) husband's mortification, I bought a bunch for his Mom. A few hours later he went back to the market with sister and told me almost all the lilies were gone. They must have had 30 buckets or more.
Oh, and farther down the way was a lady selling (among other things) bouquets. Really nice ones with kniphofia and other more unusual flowers. I think she had a few for $12 but most were $18 and some at $24. She was also selling sprigs of lavender (about 5 inches long with a few flowers) for $1.
Just thought you'd like to see some prices at other markets...

| Thanks, Susan, for the info. It helps to see what others are charging for their flowers. $8 seems like a lot for the Orientals but evidently people didn't think so. At our new downtown farmers market, mophead hydrangeas were selling for $1-$2 per stem, but at a market further out they were going for $5. Bouquets here were $5-15. Last week was my first week as a vendor, and I was trying out the waters. Sold hydrangeas by the stem. As soon as I started making bouquets with the hydrangeas, verbena, veronica, and phlox they started selling quickly. This week I'm going to take more bouquets and less single stems. Glenn |
