What flowers should I NOT put in the cooler?

| I have increased the size of my cutting garden this year, and am growing some new-to-me plants. I was researching Statice, and I read that it should not be put in a cooler. Has anybody found this to be the case? Any other flowers / fillers that I should not be putting in the cooler?
Thanks! |

| I haven't heard about statice not liking coolers, but since it lasts a couple of weeks in plain water, I probably wouldn't have thought of putting it in the cooler. Well, that, and I don't have a cooler. :-) Armitage says nothing about not cooling statice. As for other flowers not taking kindly to being cooled, I'll have to leave that answer to those that know far more than I do. That would be most of you. ThinMan |

| I do put statice in my cooler with no ill effects. What I do not put in my cooler includes zinnias and celosia. I pick these the day before market and leave the bouquets with them in the basement. Bachelors buttons I only hold in the cooler for a day or 2 before they go off to market. It seemed that more than that affected their already fairly short vase life. Carin |

I too, am not aware of any flower that you cannot put in a cooler. Statice does just fine. The foliage blackens on Ageratum and all Celosia varieties plus Sunflowers in a cooler if held for more than a couple of days. I also hold Zinnias for a day or two if req'd and place N'Sulate over them, as with the Ageratum and Celosia if I haven't removed all the leaves. Currently cooler is at 36 degrees but am going to up it to 40 to see how the Zinnias do without the N'Sulate. Cheers Kim Billabong Fresh Flower Farm |
