Lupines.....now?

I planted Lupine seeds this spring. I ended up with 42 seedlings, I started the seeds in March, probably closer to April. Everything I've read says they do not bloom the first year. So, I put them in the ground and think about how nice they'll look NEXT year. I had knee surgery last week and haven't been able to walk let alone go out into my garden until a day ago. One variety (blue) has a flower bud and the next plant has a flower! What the heck? They are less than a six months old! Can this be or do I have just really good soil? Not only that but I noticed my strawberry foxglove that I deadheaded is reblooming. Do foxgloves rebloom? Apparently mine do but wondered if this is common or it's just a weird year.

KIM I get a lot of foxglove rebloom. And how nice to have the lupines now! Lupine and foxglove bouquets for August!

Count your blessings. My "annual" lupines have suffered dreadfully in the dry and with high temperatures. In cooler seasons, they've been especially nice.

Keep up on your therapy for that knee.

Kim - the lupine I started in April and planted are starting to bloom...except the weather has gotten hot and so that is having an impact. I think they do bloom the first year, although not prolifically! The plants I grew last year just keep blooming if I keep them deadheaded and cut! Although cooler nights help them along much more than really warm days/nights!

Enjoy them!

How wonderful that you have these blooms to encourage you as you recover from surgery. I bet you were glad to get out of the house! (I've had lupines started early indoors bloom outdoors in late summer before, too. Were yours Russell hybrids?)

Mine are Russell Hybrids, but I also planted a Cherry something variety and am waiting to see if it will bloom!

Yes! Russell Hybrids they are but I also planted a Walmart pack of seeds that was all blue and it bloomed too. I'm amazed at the speed of growth for these plants in less than a year. The show next year should be something else!
Thanks Jan about the getting out of the house, I was so desperate to see my plants, my Mom went and took digital pics so I could keep up! I'm not back to normal but I can now walk so I can see them myself :) PAveggie: no therapy but thank you......I'm just trying to keep going and do too much.
