| Planted sunflower "Zebulon" from Johnny's Seeds. The seeds germinated fine, but I gradually lost most of the plants to chewed up leaves. The only thing I see on the plants is some small brown ants. Could they be the culprits, or do you think it's something else? Right now the plants are almost totally skeletonized. |

| I suspect that japanese beetles are the true culprits. I believe that ants may disturb the roots, but don't eat the leaves. Next year, plant your sunflowers in April. They will get bigger before beetle season hits, and will better tolerate the damage. |
