 o
lupines

After a beautiful show in late May and early June, my lupines look absolutely awful. Most of the leaves--the large ones, anyway--are yellow and brown, looking dead and dried up. However, we are not desperate for rain here, as I know some of you are. I was slow in deadheading, so they formed seedpods, though the pods didn't split. Some of them have bloomed for me a couple seasons. All references tell me that lupines are finicky and short-lived.

Should I cut off all the ugly foliage, hoping more will emerge? A few smaller leaves look fresh and healthy. Or should I write them off/pull them out and plant new seed, assuming I can still find some this time of year? (I'm home scale/personal use only, not wholesale, so I don't get the great catalogs that most of you get. I'd be looking in local stores now, or in retail catalogs in January.)

Thanks for your advice!
Jan

RE: lupines

I always cut back the yellowing foliage of lupines because it's so unattractive and they sprout new growth. I wouldn't let them go to seed, that weakens them and they are already a short-lived perennial.
