Statice flopping

Posted by steve22802 7a VA (My Page) on

This is my first season growing annual statice and the plants are growing very well but I'm having some trouble with stems flopping over. This causes the flowers to turn upward away from gravity and perpendicular to the stem which makes them difficult or impossible to use. Does anyone know what causes this? Is my soil perhaps too rich for this plant?

Thanks,
Steve

Steve
I've always had that problem, no matter what kind of soil I grow them in. Seems to be more prevalent on the outside flowering stems of the plant. These days I either grow them in a layer of hortnova (is fiddly when cutting) or put up a one or two horizontal string/tape barrier around the outside of the plantings to help support them.

Thanks Kim. Seems like they would get tangled in the Hortnova. I have trouble with them tangling with each other already. :(

Steve, I havent been on here lately and so I'm sorry I missed this post. Statice does not like to be too wet. By this, I mean that ordinary drip watering in a clayish soil will make them flop. I grew the Fortress series this year and they did their best when I had switched off the irrigation to their bed. Try keeping them a little on the drier side next time and see if it makes a difference. Kat
