Tall sedum (Autumn Joy, etc)

| Last week I played around some with using Autumn Joy sedum in bouquets.
Last week's bouquets incorporated Spartina pectinata grass stems and blooms, some Panicum virgatum blooms, Melica Red Spire grass blooms, and Amaranthus velvet curtains. Of the 4 bouquets I made, I sold 3. The fourth I brought back home and kept it in a vase and one week later the sedum is still looking very fresh with no sign of wilt. The grass blooms and stems have pretty much dried but still look good.
This week the sedum blooms are just a bit pinker than last week but still just a hint of pink. I used one glad (bright pink edge, soft yellow in the throat and purplish anthers) surrounded with the sedum and again used grasses - some big Miscanthus stems (no blooms), Red Spire, and Carex Oehme grass (variegated green/yellow, no blooms), and surrounded at the bottom with dark green Hosta leaves. I think they've turned out so nice that I wanted to share the combination with the readers here.
I've also been using a white blooming sedum that I have plenty of as filler in many bouquets. It has a greenish tint to it and sets of many colours wonderfully. It's earlier blooming than many of the other tall sedums and this will probably be the last week using them as they'll be starting to brown soon.

| The bouquets sold well at the farmer's market - the first to go from the table. Hail and heavy rain last week has damaged or destroyed most of the garden so I'll be going to market with only dried arrangements and wreaths for the next while. Too bad, I was just beginning to relax and enjoy myself with the fresh bouquets - at least next year will be easier in the confidence department. |

| Thanks for sharing that. I love to use Sedum. My favorite is 'Matrona'. I combine the tall stems with Celosia cristata burgundy and it sells great. If I just cut a short portion of the bloom, it will send up short side shoot blooms that I use in my mini bouquets. I'm testing some to dry it. So far about a week and a half into the drying, the blooms still look pink and good. But then Sedum is nick-named live-forever, so we'll see if they turn brown within time. What is your white variety? I'd love to try that. |

| The white blooming tall sedum was seed grown, Hylotelephium species mix. I've since discovered that they also re-seed in the garden, in the driveway, in the rocks, pretty much anywhere so cutting them before seed sets is going to have to be the way to go anyway. I used to have a Matrona for many years but it died out on me - must remember to find another and start a new batch of plants. I have some other purple stemmed/pink blooming varieties and did use a few stems from them in bouquets this year as well. |
