End of the Season Clean-up

Hello: I was wondering how everyone handles sunflower and corn stalks at the end of the season. We ended up cutting them down by hand and then rotovating the rows which was very labour-intensive. What methods do you other growers use to remove these crops? Thanks. SusanM

We use our bushhog to mow over them first and chop them up, then till the rest in.

Hi Cheryl: Thanks for the information on your system. What exactly is a bushhog? Is it an implement run off a tractor similar to what we call a brush cutter? I never thought about using that for cutting down the stalks but I sure will next year! Thanks again. Susan

Susan,
It's what we use for mowing our pasture with. It is run off the tractor and has a large deck about the width of my rows. It does a fairly good job of chopping up the stalk so we can till it in. Beats the heck out of taking the clippers to them!

Thanks for the information, Cheryl. The description of your bushhog sounds like our brush cutter. I wish I had thought of using it on the stalks and sure will try it next season. Thanks again. Susan
