New Dahlias Pictures

Here are a couple of dahlias that have come up for me, after a year of learning how to take care of them properly (thanks to the help of people on this forum). One is a gorgeous mauve that I didn't even know I had (From now on I will label them) and a delightful collarette named Sean C that bloomed yesterday after some terrible thunderstorms:

Lovely, Anna! Looks like you have a marvelous perennial bed as well. That first one is just beautiful and the collarette is cute too.

Oh so nice. The second one has such a happy face.
Is the first one true to color?

Indeed it is true to color - perhaps a tiny bit lighter, but such a heavenly mauve. And the funny thing is, I didn't even know I had a dahlia that color - I had some dahlias that didn't bloom last summer, and this winter/spring, I tried to do everything according to the experts here. It sure worked! And this winter I will be sure to label them all properly. Although I must admit - not knowing until the last minute what the bloom is, is rather fun.

Thanks Poochella - a nice compliment coming from someone who I consider to be the "Dahlia queen!" I haven't had much luck with dahlias in container, even though they are fairly large and kept well-watered. Any advice or tips?

Anna

Oh I'm far from queenly, believe me, but thank you. I have had fair luck with dahlias in large pots blooming although the plants don't seem quite as full or tall as in the garden, but I don't have any advice other than the usual care.
I am using dilute Miracle Grow on a couple, every two weeks or so, to see how they do. Others got 14-14-14 Osmocote, others got nothing! One I forgot to top, so it's tall and thin. Watering is the biggest thing to remember but it sounds like you have that covered.

What are your potted dahlias doing that you don't like?

Well - they're simply not blooming, or blooming very little and very slowly. Unlike the special dahlia bed that DH dug for me this year - (this is the first time they have been in the ground, and I know he put a ton of home-made compost there). Maybe that's the key - more compost in the potted ones? I was reluctant to put too much as my compost is rather on the raw side - not fine - tiny worms, etc.

Is it true that the more you cut the blooms, the more blooms will appear?

Well I'm right there with you on the SLOW thing. I didn't get many in the ground until June I guess, but it seems really pathetically slow this year. Our weather has been wonderful so I don't know the answer.

When I prepared my pots for dahlias I had a big pile of my wormy compost, some topsoil comprised of about 1/3 sand and good potting soil. I mixed those 3 things together along with Soil Moist crystals and planted in that. They were the first or near the first flowers to bloom, but the pots are black and soak up sun/heat like crazy. Maybe more compost next year? I don't think it could hurt if mixed in well and worms are good! The only tubers I've seen worms bother are already rotting ones.
