Beautiful shots, Sierra. Nice black background as well really pumps up the colour. How do you do that?

Jroot, I just bought a piece of black material and taped it with painters tape to a cardboard used in the back of professionally framed pics. I think its called mil board...its stronger or more solid than just cardboard.

Gotta love dahlia season, but its also kind of sad, because it also means the end of gardening season is approaching fast here.

I agree, reddscarlette. It is absolutely spectacular. I want it too. I notice that Sierra's garden web name is sierra_z2b. Hopefully that means a zone 2B which has to be in Canada. Maybe a spare tuber can be shared. HINT! I asked first LOL.

RE: A few of my dahlias

Hee hee Yes I am in Canada. No fighting over my dahlia tubers. LOL. The name of that orangy red one is 'Fidalgo Julie'....it was a free tuber from Art's nursery, that came with my order. I have to say, my mouth dropped open when I saw the colours on this one.....I'm afraid my pic doesn't do anything for it.......it is bright and gorgeous....a real stand out in the garden.

We'll we will see how it goes come spring......if all goes well.....for sure, trades would be good. I just decided yesterday, that I have to get some ball dahlias...LOL!

Great collection there Sierra.

Fidalgo Julie!!!! I've been so excited to see that little monster and it's slower than molasses here, almost pulled it out a month ago, but now I have hope that I can see that bloom. It's stunning by looks of your photo.

Do you know the name of your white pink striped splashy one? Next to last posted.

Thanks for the photos. Lots of good ball dahlias out there in many colors.

RE: A few of my dahlias

Hi poochella,

Well I don't know if this is the answer or not.....but I planted a 4 foot row of dahlias along my veggie garden.....and then planted peas across from them.....well the peas that were supposed to be short.....got extremely tall this year (OOOOPPPPSSSS).....out grew even the 6ft pea fence. LOL. So this poor dahlia was quite shaded. They still do get some sun though just not as much as I had planned or the other dahlia beds get. 'Fidalgo Julie' was the first to bloom out of all my dahlias, even not getting as much sun as it should. Also this pic is of the first bloom and it was double the size of the rest of the blooms on the plant. Still worth waiting for, I think.

The stripey one is called 'Smokey'. I've had that one for several years now.

Still waiting for a few more to bloom, hope the frost doesn't get them first.

We were at the Exhibition in Toronto yesterday, and went to the dahlia judging competition. A flower very similar to your smokey was there, and my wife fell in love.

So.......Sierra......I would really appreciate a tuber of Smokey and one of 'Fidalgo Julie' in the spring, or the fall ...whenever. I hope you can put me on your list.

Maybe you'd like some nice brugmansia cuttings. I'll be chopping down the herd soon. or some other dahlias which I have. Let me know.

RE: A few of my dahlias

Fidalgo Julie....indeed that's a must.

I'm hoping the rest of my Dinner plates bloom so you can see them!

I'll have to repost Wandas Capella. She reminds me ALOT of Kelvin Floodlight. Just that waiting game is driving me INSANE!

How many Dahlias do you have Sierra? I guess I'm going to have to make a list of what I have hu?

RE: A few of my dahlias

I find, I have a better success rate of tubers surviving if I just lift, knock the dirt off and let dry ....and store in the fall. Then divide in spring....plus by spring I can tell for sure where the eyes are. Jroot, if they make it through the winter and I have enough to trade.....I would like to trade dahlia for dahlia. What kinds do you have? Did you post pics here somewhere? The exhibition in TO. must have been very interesting.

Oh BTW Botanus offered 'Smokey' in their spring catalogue and they also had another called 'Bristol Stripe' that you might be interested at looking at. I don't have that one...but its pretty.

Haha Nikki, you should know that I don't have a clue how many dahlias I have. LOL! A few!. OHHHHHH I have a really REALLY bright yellow one....looks like the sun.....much brighter than Kelvin. :-)

RE: A few of my dahlias

Tommorrow I'll take a pic and repost what Wandas Capella looks like.

I don't have many Yellows. Lots of gold and oranges. The blue/purple (you know what I mean)

What colours are you looking for Sierra? Anything in particular? Prey tell dearie lol

Nikki~

RE: A few of my dahlias

jroot, You'll have to give me your email address.

Nikki, Nope not looking for anything in particular.....But no pink. And if you are serious about trades, email.

One more started opening yesterday and there is still one to open...I am hoping to see it before the first major frost....so far we had light frosts but it hasn't hit the dahlias yet.

I'm not sure how to send you an email, as for some reason that option is not available on your member page. However, mine is available on my page, if you wish to use it.

Yes, they are indeed the cactus style. They are my all time favourite. The yellow one is NOT Kelvin Floodlight. I do have that one elsewhere. I'm not sure what it is, but it sure is pretty.

The tubers on the red one were HUGE last year. We'll see how they look this fall.

 o
RE: A few of my dahlias

Do you have any named varieties, that arn't pink?

I HAD all kinds, but our favourites were of the pink, yellow and purple hue. For example, I traded Akita, and Berliner Kleene away in a plant swap a few years ago as I did not like their appearance. I still have Fringed Star, and Yellow Star which I love. They are good bloomers for me. I also have Brindisi which is about to bloom but hasn't yet. The others I have used to have names, but somehow the labels went missing. Others were gifts ( with no names but are pretty ).

 o
RE: A few of my dahlias

Its difficult to keep the names all straight. I am going to try writing right on the tubers this year....

We are expecting a frost this week going by the forcast, so not long now till they are dug up and we will see how big the clumps are this year.
