A long while back I asked for suggestions for orange colored dahlias from this crowd. You guys really responded with some lovely ones. Here are a couple of pictures of the orange ones I went with:

Swan's Olympic Flame blooms a lot.

Robin Hood is so cute.

This is my first ever bloom of Croydon Masterpiece and it is just beginning to open.
Dahlia 'Croydon Masterpiece'

I also planted Orange Cushion this year and its first buds are about to color up.

I got Firepot last year, it grew and never bloomed last year. It over-wintered in the ground and the plant came up fine this year but I have not had a single bloom on it yet. Is it possible to have a "dud" plant? Maybe its because I haven't fertilized it? I keep meaning to do it but I'm unsure what to use. I have some Schultz Instant Bloom Plus 10-60-10, does that sound like it would be good for Dahlias?

I love all the photos you guys have been posting. Thank you for taking the time to add beauty to the world.

Nice orangey choices Annabeth. Robinhood is a good reliable dahlia. Love the color on Swan's Olympic Flame. YES there can be duds. If they're really duds, I toss them and start over. If you're willing to try a tuber off that plant again next year, go ahead: your luck may turn. But not blooming two years in a row and I'd toss it.

You know Poochella...you made a good point. I could try another tuber off of Firepot. That way I can try tuber division for the first time on a plant that is not so important to me--a practice plant. If I mess it up, what have I lost? I've lost only a plant that was a dud anyway.

Here is another photo of the same Croydon Masterpiece flower after I cut it and took it inside. Photobucket

Here is the same flower in a different light:

Beautifully grown and aptly named! That is one big beautiful dahlia.

I think it may be a shade late to use the Schultz's stuff relating to the theory that nitrogen late in the season causes poor storage of tubers. Though that theory has been shot down by at least one student of such things. Someone in the know said Miracle Grow type foliar feeds will get out of the plant's 'system' in time not to affect storage. I don't know.

Annabeth, I like orange (and red and yellow) too. I'd say to persist with the Firepot. I got one this year with a collection of small, mostly cactus tubers. I really like this one. It was the latest to open of the whole collection (all planted in the same conditions at the same time). Here are some pictures. The first one really glows because of the way the light was.

I also got Swan's Olympic Flame this year but it hasn't bloomed at all. That's probably because it got stepped on by a bear.

I'm going to be posting some pictures of other dahlias from this year on the Discussion side of this forum - or - is it better if I put them on the gallery? What is the preference here. I'm visiting from the Hosta Forum. McTavish
