My First Dahlia Bloom Today!

I kind of like it ... it's a good yellow and contrasts nice with the dark foliage ... and I like that red stripe on the bottom petal!

I grew this from seed this year. It was a pack of mixed seeds ... the company had too few of some seeds to offer so they mixed them and I bought a pack of the mixed seeds ... it took me some time to figure out that this is a dahlia.

That is a cutie! I also like the stripe. How big was the bloom & how tall is the plant? From seed?, you are a clever person. Do you think that you will have tubers?

The plant is about two feet tall and the flower is a bit over three inches across. Once the seedlings grew a bit I pricked them out and put them in a gallon pot, then, a couple months ago, I planted them in the ground and noticed that they had formed tubers. I have another plant that is going to bloom in a few days. The seed pack said any dahlias were "ayrlies" or "clarion" hybrids ... I can't find anything on the "ayrlies", but the "clarions" have dark foliage and single yellow flowers, so I assume this must be a "clarion" hybrid.

Don't ya just love it when things go well !! I tried propagating from cuttings this Spring with pretty good success. I'll start digging these soon and then we will see what happened under ground.
It's great that you had success with the seeds and now you have tubers. How cool is that !?!

The plant had a second flower but it lacked the red stripe that I liked. At least I got a picture of it.

Are these seeds from Wayne Holland? I got clarion seeds mixed with others from him a couple of years ago including from scented plants. I have been growing them ever since. They are a lot of fun. You never know what you will get. You will find the character of the flower will change a little as the plant matures, the weather cools, water and fertilizer, etc. Also, they change year to year. If you save the tubers, you will get earlier flowers next year.
