I couldn't waste these blooms when cutting down the parent plants. Some are faded and small, but still worthy for one last chance at glory in a vase!

Bottom photo-the big orange-who is it??? Great color & shape. Wonderful photos, I'm jealous. South of us, on the Lake Michigan shoreline, they had about 6" of snow yesterday. So it begins..... Lake Superior kept us warmer, but the waves were humungous, wouldn't want to be a mariner out on the big water. No baby yet. Mama-to-be is now off work on the Dr.s orders. |

| This is my first venture to the gallery and have I been missing out. Your flowers are beautiful Poochella. It certainly isn't over for you is it!!! What a wonderful variety of colors. Seems they all blend in bouquets. |

| Jamlover- get with the program LOL! The gallery is a bounty to behold. We should lobby for more pages than just the two allowed. Granny, that beauty is Hillcrest Kismet categorized as a pink, but it is the most stunning coral-gold-pink wonderbloom. Here it is with some run of the mill medium pink snapdragons for comparison.
And a close up.
The plant was just cut down today so I don't know how tubers will be. Blooms are about 6 inches x 6 inches deep and the plant was heavily branched (extra stakes needed) and 4-5 ft tall for me. I had the camera set on indoor photo here, so the color looks more pink. side view:
Unopened view
And that's all the views I have! Time to get back outside- it only rained and hailed briefly this a.m. so it's tuber time.... |

| Poochella, that Hillcrest Kismet is amazing. I LOVE it. Wish I were closer to sneak a tuber from your stash. LOL |
RE: It's not over, til it's over....

| That last one is perfection. Don't you have any insects in W WA? I didn't look at a blossom all summer that I didn't see at least a dozen looking back at me. |

| Jroot: time to defect to the USA to escape the oppression of the Canadian plant material import laws! I could hide you in the woods for a few months, then you're on your own. Jamlover, we have plenty of insects but this year was very kind to the dahlias. Very few earwigs, no mites, no mildew. I give all the credit to good healthy soil, my frog, and adequate care and watering. |

| Absolutely fabulous!!! Your snapdragons are also very pretty. I too have been blessed with good weather so I will do another blossom harvest on the weekend. I've got more Smokies!! No earwigs on the fall dahlias here but some of the summer ones were very lacy. I need to get a frog!! Sharon |

| Sharon, have you ever dug Smokey tubers? I'll be interested in hearing what you find when you dig them up, if you dig them up. About Hillcrest Kismet: unfortunately it only had the mother tuber (discarded) and one large, one small tuber. That's it. For such a wonderful bloom it was awfully scant on tuber production. Don't know if this is the norm or not, but it was one of my favorite new blooms for 05. One of about 50 LOL. How can you pick just one? |
RE: It's not over, til it's over....
| | |
| I plan to dig them up next week. I'll let you know how it goes. How long after cutting do you wait to dig? Sharon |
RE: It's not over, til it's over....
| | |
| I've found that waiting the stated 4-8 days isn't necessary to spot eyes, anyway. So I've been cutting and digging as soon as the very next day, but mostly 2 days later. The tubers seem moister and easier to cut if I don't wait so long, even though there is plenty of moisture in the ground. They do seem to pop out a bit on some varieties if you wait several days though. |

Poochella, Boy have I missed out not checking the gallery regularly! Your photos have me DROOL, DROOL, DROOL!. I wish I had 2 acres! Fabulous. :-) |

| Sharon did you dig Smokey up yet? I found one more close up of Hillcrest Kismet. I highly recommend this dahlia- it's just a beauty. Not fully opened here, but never mind that.
