Dahlia Seeds

There have been some posts looking for dahlia seeds of different types. In the past, seed companies would breed lines of dahlias that could be grown from seeds and the product would be uniform enough to satisfy most gardeners. They focused on the small bedding types.

More recently, there has been a trend to breed low growing dahlias and to sell them as rooted cuttings that are for sale in your local nursery. These dahlias are generally patented, meaning that the owners of the plant patent receive a royalty for every plant sold. This also means that propagation is prohibited unless the owner of the patent approves and a royalty contract is signed. These new dahlias are an excellent product and are remarkably disease free and easy to grow. However, most serious dahlia growers want to grow the taller varieties that produce abundant flowers for bouquets and flower shows. These varieties are not patented and propagation and the sale of tubers is perfectly legal and done all the time.

A few people want to buy seeds from dahlia nurseries that are from the taller growing show and cut flower types. These seeds are extremely variable and 90% of them produce an inferior plants but the 10% are well worth the effort for some people.

If you access the "Dahlia Big List" , they list some sources for dahlia seeds. Here is a link to the Big List:
