Can I put 2 tubers in one pot?

Hi

I'm new to Dahlias and to Tubers as well. I'd like to grow the Wee Ones collection. The are a dwarf variety so I was thinking that since they're small I could double up in a pot.

Whatdya think?

Thanks!!
Dale

I wouldn't recommend it. I tried two stargazers (2/3ft) in one fairly large pot and neither bloomed. I also saved the tubers thinking that was the problem and it took me well over an hour getting them apart because of how they had grown together. This might work for the really tiny 9inch pot dahlia but not the larger ones.

Well that's a bummer. I have so little room to grow them and i really don't mind if they "mate". I just figured that i would just get a bigger flower show. Oh well..thanks for the input:)

I had toooo many tubers last year so I put some in pots. 2 per pot (really big pots) with one stake in the middle. They did well and produced loads of flowers. It worked for me!

dcrosby,

If they are the small plants, I think you should be able to do it. My wife purchasd a planted pot with the small dahlias in it, and when I cleared the pot last fall, there were a lot of tubers there. Make it a large pot, if possible, so you don't end up watering two or three times a day.

Hi busy-girl and gladzoe

Did you start them in pots or did you grow them in pots?

I started all of them inside in the little celo packs that garden center packs come in. I re-pot whenever they get too big. On the balcony they were planted in 5 galleon pots. Only the two which were in their own pot with some glad bulbs, bloomed, the other two had great foliage and lots of tubers but no blooms. I do love using pots though as it is so easy to dig them up in the fall.
