Ideal Depth?

I've decided to plant Dahlias on my deck this year, instead of in the ground. I'm planning on making planters 12' long, 3' wide and 18" deep. I'm thinking that will be plenty deep, but since I'm only building now, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I have big planters from Gardeners Supply, that are self-watering, and much deeper, but they cannot be left outside in the winter, and its getting too much to move them twice a year.

The ones I'm building, can be covered with plastic, after Dahlias are dug, and left stationary.

Any ideas, or advice? (I'm thinking 3 planters.)
