UGHHH! I need help! I'm really confused!

I'm new to bulbs, but not to gardening. I ordered Dahlias for the first time and planted them today. My order didn't come with any instructions so I called the company I got them from and I was told to plant them 6" deep, and 12-36 inches apart. That's a huge range! After I planted them I looked at the bag and it said 5 per bag, but what was in the bag was just one big clump of stuff that didn't look like it could be seperated, so I planted it all in one hole. (I ordered these months ago and couldn't remember how many I ordered) After confirming with the company, there were 5 per bag. How in the world do I seperate the bulbs? They are all attached together! Does anyone have any pictures showing how to do it? Thanks!
