spring return of tubers left in ground

Hey all.

I've never grown dahlias before, and I bought a plant last. It grew and flourished in a large pot, then died back as I expected it would. I decided to leave the tuber in the pot over the winter since cold isn't a problem (I'm in Sunnyvale, CA), but I left the pot out in the rain all winter. The drainage is excellent, so I thought that would be ok.

My question is, if it does come back, when do you think that will happen here in the south bay? How long should I give it this spring before I assume it has rotted and replant?
