How to get them to eye up?

Posted by pdshop 5 (My Page) on

It is hot today. I got out all my tools, the dahlias and was going to spend the day putting them in the PAPER lined pots! Only one has eyes? The two boxes and three bags of tubers are all hard and fine, but no eyes? What can I do to hurry this along? I want to get some in the ground?

Put them in a ziplock baggie in some moist peat or potting soil, leave the top open a little & put them in a warm sunny window. One lady on the dahlia net said she put her baggies in her car out in the sun to pop the eyes!

Thank you so much Plantlady. I had put moist peat on them yesterday but will put them in plastic bags today. Makes sense. Now I am playing with the weather here in MA. It has been 88 degrees. I wonder if I dare plant some?

No, no, no don't plant them yet. I'm getting the sames temps you are and I know it's sooo tempting. Average temp here is about 60-65 degrees. If it can go up 20 degrees it can go down 20.

I feel the same way as you do pdshop. Last year I started planting tubers May 7th. So now I'm thinking that if the weather looks good between now and then I should be good to plant...right? I'm sooo impatient! Now the forecast calls for 5 days of showers starting Fri. So I wait.

I thought I saw some eyes, but mine have been in for 2 weeks now! Is that ok? I don't see any progress in the soil though. How long does it take for them to come up? Zone 7 we are completely done with frosts. It's funny when they start to come up a mound appears in the soil before they peek out!

I'm right on the 8a/7b line and mine finally broke through the soil surface the past few days. They have been in the ground for about 3 weeks.

I am so jealous and nervous about what I am doing. I have way to many dahlias. Some of the tubers have eyed up and I shouold put them in pots until they are ready to go into the ground. The others are in litterboxes on top of peat. Should I keep that moist? I put them out in the sun every day.
