HELP! Tubers are getting soft

Posted by busy-girl 8 (My Page) on

I have my tubers sitting 1/2 way in peat moss on a table with heating cables on the bottom. Most of the tubers are sending up shoots...some are just sitting there! and a couple are feeling slightly soft. I have been keeping the peat moss slightly damp....why are my some of the tubers getting soft? Can the soft ones be saved or are they rotting? And why are some not eyeing up? Any Ideas out there would be appreciated. I purchased them from Swan Island and Connells and I only have one of each variety ....so when they're gone....they're gone!

RE: HELP! Tubers are getting soft

FWIW, I had a 2007 tuber that took 81 days before it had a sprout that could be taken as a cutting. I have several 2008 tubers (from Swan Island) that have only now shown eyes, that's 35 days after I put them in my tuber trays. I took cuttings of other 2008 tubers 8 days after putting them in the trays...so it varies.

Do the soft tubers have roots? If they don't, then I would stop watering. Tubers don't really need water, they should have enough to create sprouts and roots (get them started that is.)

If there are roots, then try watering as far away from the tuber as possible, and as deep as possible. Let the roots try to grow to the water, and the soil to wick up the water towards the tuber. Tubers shouldn't be sitting constantly in damp soil. I'm having great success with peat/soil mix that's completely dry around the tuber with just a once or twice a week dribble of water over the tuber itself.

Russ

RE: HELP! Tubers are getting soft

Thanks Russ....I haven't watered them any more than just to moisten the peat moss a little once a week, some have roots some don't. The soft ones have no roots and not much of an eye....and one "ala mode" is rotted one the inside but has some great new shoots! I am worried that I may be doing something wrong...Could it be that there is too much heat from the cables?

Can't help with the heat cables Janice, I don't use them. I suppose its a possibility. I would think the tubers are rotting if they're getting soft, can't think of another reason they'd get soft. So something's off, and if it isn't water, then heat and light are your only other options to adjust.

Cheers,
Russ
