Preen & Dahlias

Hello,

A month or so ago I was weeding and putting Preen down...without thinking I put some down in the area where my dahlia tubers will be planted. Now I am nervous to plant there....any advice? What can I do to help the soil there? Some of my new tubers came with instructions from the Association that said to use a 5-10-10 fertilizer 2 weeks prior to planting....would this correct the situation?

Thanks so much for your help....

RE: Preen & Dahlias

Preen is a pre-emergence herbicide manufactured for the home gardener. The active ingredient is trifluralin. Some commercial flower growers use trifluralin for pre-emergence control of weeds. It has also been used in overhead watering systems in the dahlia fields. Fertilizer does not counteract the use of herbicide. When an herbicide such as trifluralin is used, it is expected that sprouting weeds other than broadleaf will be checked for a period of three months unless the soil is disturbed. Since you used Preen over a month ago, it isn't going to cause any harm to your dahlia tubers.

Weeded our flower bed today. Had an area that was really weedy and because we didn't want to reweed that area in a couple of weeks we preened it. Now I realize that would be a perfect place for my dahlias. Can I plant them in that spot? It hasn't rained on it yet so if we scraped the preen off would it be better? Stupid I know.

I pulled that same stunt some years ago and my Dahlias were just fine. Go ahead and plant. I am starting to think that Dahlias are just potatoes with georgeous blooms. As Poochella says, just as long as you don't pour Round Up on them....

I put out transplants of my dahlias when they are 6"-18" tall and immediately after planting put down preen. I have been doing this for 8 years and no problems.
