I planted in mid-April but only 2 are starting to come up. We have had an extremely amount of rain. Should I dig them up or just wait and see. I am so new to Dahlias and I need some help. Thanks

I'd say, open up your holes and check them out. They might be rotting. If the weather forcast says that you are going to get more rain / cool weather; Pot them up in dry soil and keep them inside for a bit. I got lucky. Planted them on Sunday and we've had warm dry weather since. none up yet; but I'm definetely not worried about rot.

It really depends on variety and soil temp. They may just be sad they are in cold soil, so they will take a bit longer to emerge. I agree with the above comment, I would peak at them and see if they are rotting and then get them in dry soil if they aren't. Maybe you can try removing the dirt on top of the tuber (if they are not rotten) so the sun can warm the soil a bit more. This might jump start them, and they you can back fill as the grow... just a thought. I know how antsy I get about bulbs/tubers. I dug up my ranunculus like 10 times to make sure they were growing : ) Cheers, Keriann~

Granny, I could have posted your question!! So, in seeing the replies, I dug mine up--They're still solid, and some have sprouts starting-so, take heart, we'll have beautiful dahlias yet.

The one thing I DON'T see posted is the fact that they just may not bloom! 3 yrs ago I ordered 8 tubers from a WA grower and 3 never bloomed, 2 never even came up. Last year, ordered 9 more (OR grower this time) and at least 3 either rotted or never grew. This year, another dozen ordered but one in particular has just sat and sat in the pot. It is not rotting, looks like the day I opened it but it simply refuses to sprout. Because it may be a late bloomer, I am just leaving it alone (except to dig it up periodically to see what's wrong. Sometimes you just can't do everything right or have done nothing wrong. David
