I use netting on my Dahlias.
For me it is easier this way.
Because I'm growing around 120 or more plants.

I use 7 ft bamboo stakes that Kmart carries. they are pretty solid, and are reasonably priced. But as I continue to move up the numbers I may have to figure out something akin to what symi77 is using. I think I am up to about 75-80 this year.

Mine definitely need staking. I don't have full sun (6-7 hours) and they grow taller than usual. I end up with a lot of 6-8 ft plants.

If there is someone with bamboo nearby they may be glad for you to come cut them. Check your local Craigslist free section.

Otherwise, even other wood/branches that you prune throughout the year may be sufficient to work as the vertical support.

Use sturdy metal stakes. It's not pleasant to use flimsy stakes and then worry about fallen plants after a storm, or simply because of the weight of the flowers. Also, make sure to put the stakes in before you plant, not only after they need staking- this ensures you don't stab through any tubers.

Found a pack of tall bamboo stakes at my local nursery. Will see how they work out. Thanks everyone.
