Finally planting - ooops eyes are lllong!

HI there

I am just now getting around to planting my dahlias. It's been a strange season, with a major flood behind us, so the dahlias have been indoors sitting patiently.

My question is: How deep should I plant the tubers if they have lllong eyes? Usually, at this time of year, they are just beginning to sprout, but this year they have taken off and some eyes are already sprouted to about 3 inches. Should I plant, with the tip closer to the surface, or plant them deeper so the eye must work its way up to the surface?

Thanks!!!
