| I have two potted dahlias that are losing leaves. I left them outside after hardening them off for about a week. In the next few days they endured ~40 degree temps and 30 mph winds. Is this stress as a result of that or something else? The dahlias I kept in for a few more days and planted in the ground aren't showing these symptoms.
BTW, the damaged dahlias are still putting out new growth, but at the same time, I'm still losing leaves, either from rotting away, or at the joint between leaf and stem. What to do???? |

| Hi, Sounds like they've been through some stress. I see a few crispy brown edges on leaves like that and just cut them off: either the whole leaf branch, or just individual leaves. Photo 1 looks like physical wind damage, and a few light brown spots to watch mid leaf. Photo 2 looks good enough for me. Watch the light brown spots and let us know if it spreads. Could be smut. Photo 3 I'd just break off the lower branches to the left and right of the stalk (~ 9 o'clock and 4 o'clock) and let the plant go about producing more healthy foliage. Can you keep them protected or huddled up together if strong winds are expected again? |

| Thanks Poochella. I can keep them protected (they're 5 ft. away from my kitchen door), I'll just have to be more diligent. ....And what is "smut"? I've never heard the word in that context. |
|
| yeah, and if you google it use the word 'dahlia' in front of it. One article http://members.shaw.ca/hydahlia/smut.html and discussion below |
Here is a link that might be useful: Dahlia smut and diseases discussed here, see linked photo

| Thanks again Poochella. It doesn't seem as though the conditions for smut have been provided, but the symptoms are certainly similar. The dahlia in the middle photo has some chlorotic and deformed leaves that don't show especially well in the photo. I'm afraid it's dahlia mosaic virus. If it is, I have no idea how to proceed, so I guess I'll wait everything out. |
