Best material for mulching dahlias

Does anyone have a good suggestion as to what works well to mulch dahlia beds.I have done several searches, and haven't run across anything. I have used shredded wood chips in the past, but have read that they aren't a good option. Would straw work, or cause more weeds. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Straw should work fine. I use a 1-2" layer of composted manure. You would expect weeds to flourish in it, but they don't. Once the Dahlias fill in they tend to shade out any weeds anyway.

Cocoa Shell Mulch. It’s sharp so slugs are deterred. I get mine at Menard‘s for less than 10.00 a bag. It has a great chocolate smell for the 1st month and holds moisture well. It is toxic to pets. Dogs like to eat it so be warned.

Wow, I wish we had easy access to cocoa shell mulch here. It looks amazing! I may try ordering some online as an experiment. Very cool!
