| Hi,
I am a first time dahlia grower and had a question about topping. I have started two "Fire Pot" dahlias indoors and am going to be transplanting outdoors in a week or so. The plants are currently around 12" tall and have four sets of leaves open (with the fifth set a tight unopen clump). My question is should I top with four or five sets of leaves. The label on the bag of tubers say they will be 18" to 24" when fully grown. I'm not exactly sure how big the flowers are supposed to be. Some research on the Internet has indicated anywhere from 3" to 6". The label also says they are "Decorative Dahlia- Size #1". Any suggestions as to when to top or how large I can hope the flowers will be would be much appreciated. Thanks. |

| The lowest set of leaves are known as the "cotyledon" leaves--the very first set of leaves that appear on the stem. Now, count 3 sets of leaes ABOVE the cotyledon leaves, and pinch above them. In other words, pinch above the third set of true leaves. For absolutely fabulous information about growing dahlas, go down from the top until you come to the posting "Dahlias in pots" by "proudgm". Open it, and the 5th posting inside this post is a post by "poochella" in which at the bottom of his post is a reference to the American Dahlia Society. Read it, download it, and print it. It is authentic, detailed, and accurate. You could not ask for a better source, nor a better article! ENJOY ! |
