Know anything about Viruses

| I grew Castle Drive last year and the first leaves that showed up were all blotchy with yellow spots. I was just about to pull it out when the new growth came up green and pretty. From then on it was green and healthy looking and bloomed great. This year I took cuttings and grew the tubers in pots and again the first leaves came out blotchy but then the new growth looks great. Can a virus only show up for a while and then show no signs for the rest of the year? I am baffled.
This is what it looks like in the beginning
This is the new growth

This happens to me too. It disappears, including on the old growth, by mid-June. I asked a major grower about this last year because it happened to some of the plants from their tubers. They were sure that it was not a virus. Still do not know what it is.

Thanks for the ideas. I would agree that it could possibly be iron except it only happens with castle drive and not with any of the other varietys I grow. Maybe it is more sensitive to that kind of stuff or something. I just don't know.

I've grown Castle Drive a couple years and never had it do that. It is baffling. Might be worth a second and third opinion from other growers as to virus or disease.

According to Washington State Univ. most dahlias have virus. Sometimes when a dahlia is stressed by other factors the virus symptoms show. Some dahlias are affected very negatively by virus and these varieties tend to disappear over time as the stock gets diseased.
