Very pretty! What is this one's name?

I think it is Miss Rose Flecture. I had so any tubers last year that I did not have time to mark them all properly. Some of my labels faded over the winter. I will be better prepard this year.

Congratulations Viking! Given your rather slow start to summer in the NE, you are doing well to have a bloom so soon.

Thanks poochella it is raining again here. Sure hope to see the sun this summer.

You will see the sun eventually. Last year was our turn for the slow, sorry summer. I think we had the furnace on in August! Still saw plenty of dahlias, but this is the best start to growing in history for me. Warm and dry, no complaints (yet.)

I had no complaints about our dahlia season until last Sunday when we were hit hard by hail. I lost one plant, but the other 100+ are going to make it. A lot of the foliage looks pretty shredded, but the plants will make it. A couple days after the hail, we had a windstorm which blew several of my untied larger plants down. Now they are all tied. But in the big picture, I think this is going to be a fantastic growing season in the northwest! I'm new to this top pinch activity but have had advice that this is a good thing. It still feels uncomfortable to take away the first bloom opportunity. Where does one find a zone map? Since Poochella also lives in West WA and is in 7, I'm assuming I am also in 7. Yes?

Hi Phyllis, Below is a link to your average zone map in the NW US. Lots of microclimates with our geography though. I assume you're in Redmond WA vs Oregon, though we didn't have a smidgeon of hail last Sunday out here. What a wonderful year we've had so far. Glad your plants took a lickin' and kept on tickin'. Taking away the first bloom will lead to more blooms later on and give you a fuller plant, much preferred in my book. Happy growing! |

7B, Phyllis now says with confidence! Thank you poochella! And yes, we had hail here in Redmond WA, hail up to 1/2 inch in diameter. Issaquah got it too, though accross the water in Seattle, they didn't even hear the thunder, and no hail. I was told that Seattle enjoyed sunshine all Sunday. People at work who live in Seattle, Kent and Edmonds that received some of my tubers and small plants looked at me like I was crazy when I asked how their plants fared through the hail storm. But mine survived and perhaps they are stronger for it.
