| Anyone else here in the rainy midwest losing their tubers to rot? It is so discouraging. Just when things start to dry out, the daily rains come again, and claim another fledgling dahlia plant. Just hoping I'm not the only one with this problem, cause then I'll think it is just my goof ups causing the problem. |

| I am in the same boat with you. I am right on the WI/IL border and we have gotten rain and no sun for 2 weeks now. It should dry out a bit today and then go back into rain : (. Bummer you are losing some, I lost one so far. I always start my dahlias inside, and set them out later than most to avoid the cold spring rain (even though it is now cold summer rain). I also amend my beds so they have really good drainage. Maybe when you dig in the fall you can add compost to improve drainage? Not much you can do now, except dig them up which would also stunt them, and re=plant into drier beds once the rain has past. Lets keep our fingers crossed for some sunshine! Keriann~ |

| Thanks Keriann, I am definitely going to amend my beds this fall, in the meantime I guess I should enjoy the beautiful hydrangeas that seem to thrive in this rain. |

| You are right, mine are over 5 feet tall and loaded with blooms! They do love these rainy days... yep, it is raining once again right now! :( Keriann~ |

| Some of the stalks that grew out of the rotted tubers are still intact. Is there a chance that they might take root, and grow from where they are, in to a flower producing dahlia plant? |
RE: dahlia tubers rotting
| | |
| In my experience, YES! They are tough little buggers, it really takes a lot to kill them off once they have set out shoots. I would let them be, if you get foliage you should get blooms. It is when they send out roots and have no eyes (shoots) that it is a dud. I will keep my fingers crossed for you. I know the feeling, it is sad to see mother nature wins. We have two days of sunshine and they are loving it! I already have 2 dozen buds on them! I will say, I started some brugmansia cuttings (Cindy ROCKS!!) and they love this wet, cool-er weather, (as cuttings) 90% have been potted up and are growing like mad! Keriann~ |

| Thanks Keriann. Wow, two dozen buds! That is exciting! Good luck with the brugs. I grew some a few years ago, and loved them. Their blooms are so cool, especially the doubles. Enjoy. |

| You had Brugs up here too!!! Why did you stop growing them and do you have any tips for me besides the 'normal' advice? Keriann~ |
RE: dahlia tubers rotting
| | |
| No real reason why I stopped, other than I didn't overwinter the brugs successfully, and didn't order new starts the next year. Probably because I ordered so many dahlias! This year, I ordered some starts of really cool looking mums. They should arrive next week. Some of the pictures of them look like dahlias! |
RE: dahlia tubers rotting
| | |
| Oh fun! I always forget about mums until it is too late. Where did you get starts from? Keriann~ |
RE: dahlia tubers rotting
| | |
| I think it was King's Mums. They are nearly finished taking orders for the season, but it might still be possible to get a few. Some of them are in beautiful pink, white and yellow colors. I think I ordered nine starts, although it would have been easy to go crazy buying more. Thought maybe I should use some restraint since this is my first attempt with rooting and then planting them. If you don't want to try those this year, i will share next year, if they grow well for me. |

| Wow, They have some beautiful mums! Let me know how they do. Keriann~ |
RE: dahlia tubers rotting

| Will do Keriann. Hope I can keep them alive thru the summer heat, cause they really are pretty awesome looking. |

I ordered 13 from Kings...my first year to do it too. I have mine growing in 4" pots in my greenhouse to get good strong root systems growing then I will plant them into big pots so I can bring them back into the greenhouse is frost threatens before they finish blooming. I m really excited about mine! I bought several of most different catagories to give them a try out. |

| Sounds great lizalily. Maybe my new mum's ( I ordered 9) will be a consolation for all of the dahlias I have lost to our nonstop rain. Over half of the 70 I planted look like they are in serious trouble. Doing serious soil amendment before next years' tubers get planted. |

| I thought I lost one, but I noted today several new shoots coming out from it. All the others around it are several feet tall and blooming, but this wee one has started up again. Bless her! |

| Lost two to rot in our rainy June / early july. One was a big bummer as it was probably the one I wanted to see the most - Parkland Glory. next year.... |
